MORE TRAINS AND METRO TUNNEL FULLY FUNDED
The Andrews Labor Government is building Melbourne’s new Metro Tunnel and ordering 70 new trains to transform Melbourne’s rail network, run more trains and carry more passengers in Dandenong.
The Victorian Budget 2016/17 fully funds the Melbourne’s new Metro Tunnel – the biggest rail project in Australia.
The project gives the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines their own tunnel through the CBD, freeing up space in the Loop to run more trains in and out of the City, including on the Cranbourne-Pakenham lines. It includes new underground stations at Arden, Parkville and Domain, and two new city stations directly connected to Flinders Street and Melbourne Central.
Sixty five brand new, high capacity trains – also fully funded by the Labor Government – will run on the line, freeing up more trains and more space across Melbourne. The Labor Government will also deliver five new X’Trapolis trains, to further boost capacity on the Metropolitan network and support local jobs in our train building sector.
Work to remove 50 of Victoria’s most dangerous and congested level crossings will continue, to reduce road congestion, improve public transport, and save lives. The Victorian Budget also fully funds the Mernda Rail Extension and the Frankston Station Precinct Redevelopment
